Dear Teresa & Dave,

Best wishes for the start tomorrow, we'll be thinking of you. You'll laugh at this, I've printed your pictures from your bulletin and stuck them on my computer monitor to remind me that your out there, probably wet, cold & hungry while I'm sitting here at my desk next to my heat and able to eat when ever I want!

We'll be watching your progress on the web site and reading your bulletins. Watch out for those sharks! Good luck.

Dear Teresa & David,

Thanks for the update, glad to hear you are safe & well. What horrendous conditions you have had! I am full of admiration for your endurance and courage. I am very glad that you took shelter, this is good seamanship and may turn out to be a race winning tactic with the attrition occurring out there. Barbara & I are thinking of you constantly and sending our hopes for your safety and success. Keep focused on the goal of getting to the finish safely. I know you will sail fast, as always.

Very best wishes, Paul Nudd.

Teresa,

Sounds like fun. Ever wonder why you are there??? Well I imagine when you do finish the race it will be a huge sense of achievement - a bit like climbing Everest. Best of luck. I hope you do really well in the race and the crew plus boat come out of it in good shape. Take care.

Hi Dave and Therese, It has been wonderful to hear of your excellent progress and great placing to date. We were slightly scared for you though with all the stormy weather around this area of the world. I bet old Trial Bay gaol has never looked so good! And I thought that being 20 weeks pregnant and having a fat little alien do somersaults inside was an adventure - nothing compared to what you guys have been up to. And I'll never think of sailing in nice calm Sydney Harbour in quite the same way again. All the best for the rest of the journey. Look forward to further updates. Love Kate and Rod.

How exciting it has been following your progress up the Australian East Coast - a really gutsy effort. Great going. An eagerly awaited event each day is to tune in to the 5.30pm position reports on the short wave radio, and these coupled with the updates really keep us in the picture. Now in the Coral Sea and in the area of the 'doldrums' you still manage to see the lighter side. On tonights's sked you mentioned a new meaning for the word 'becalmed'. Hope those breezes soon start again to send you on your way. Wishing you just the best. Our love, Anne and Peter

Dear Teresa and Dave,

Have been following your progress nearly every day since you started. The map is getting quite exciting - you're really closing in! Your emails have been great, although I don't think I exhaled once during the Trial Bay one - I just kept taking in more breath! This is just a short note to let you know that you are very much in my thoughts. I'm sending heaps of good wind vibes your way. Rob said to say Good Luck - he has been stuck in Seattle with boat problems for 3 weeks so far. The other 4 girls in my office also wish you the best - they are becoming quite excited with this race!

Are we there yet? I want an icecream? Dad I feel sick?

Hope all is going well and that the boat full of silly people is going well. Who's stupid idea was it to put the race's tallest people into the smallest boat. Sounds too hard for me I will wait until it comes out on video.

I am in Pusan at the moment and it could be possible that I may even be in Kobe (next to Osaka) for a while. When you get a chance tell me when you have arrived and how long you are intending to stay there. Sake for everyone.

Now get back to your job you lot.

Howdy Montane crew,

Congratulations on fininshing and doing so well! Top effort. I've enjoyed receiving emails about your progress although Ive had some difficulty replying so I'm not sure you've got any messages from me.

I hope the food went well! Let me know what you thought. I'd be very interested.

Have a great stay in Osaka (or are you homewardbound already?) Just out of interest, how are you getting the boat back? I imagine the person at the airline checkin would be forced to charge you excess baggage on it! Or does it fold up into two neat suitcases for transport? Anyway give me a yell when you get back.

Teresa and Dave,

We at UNSW, staff and students alike, are delighted with the fantastic performance by "Montane": smallest yacht ever to compete, 6th overall and 2nd in Class C racing division. The word monumental springs to mind. Congratulations to you intrepid sailors! In recognition of your achievement, we have a complimentary copy of the Proceedings of our Workshop on the Safety of Ocean Racing Yachts, which you missed because you left Sydney (heading for Melbourne) the day before it took place.

When you have recovered your breath, I would like to ask youto give a talk to the RINA/IMarE about the race, the planning that is required, the conditions you experienced, and the afterglow of knowing that you have done well. Not necessarily immediately; we can negotiate in and around the film rights!

Hi I'm Dave in Seattle, I liked reading about your race to Japan. I have a 30ft. sailboat built in Japan in 1978 called a BlueWater 30 - look's like a Yamaha33. I don't know if you monitor this site.... But, I'm thinking about sailing to the South Pacific in my boat. And I was wondering if you were comfortable in a small (32') boat? I mean; will I be OK in my 7,500lb boat? It's very strong and seaworthy. But it's a little light as Montane was. Will displacement really matter for comfort, sleeping, sea kindliness, etc.? Thank's for any advice! I loved reading about your journey. Best, Dave
